Man city and Spurs in chase of Ocar Cardozo

Last week Oscar Cardozo hinted his future may not lie with Portuguese champions Benfica. Over the weekend Manchester City were linked with the Paraguay striker and today in Portugal there were reports claiming Tottenham are interested.

With reports that Emmanuel Adebayor will finally get his dream move to AC Milan coupled with Roque Santa Cruz’s tepid displays, it is unsurprising that this weekend’s red tops have linked Manchester City with a move for the 27-year-old striker.

Similarly, with Spurs not holding on to Eidur Gudjohnsen and with Robbie Keane’s future likely to be away from White Hart Lane, Harry Redknapp will likely sign a striker to boost his team’s Champions League campaign.

Besides Manchester City and Tottenham a whole host of other English clubs have been linked with Cardozo including Everton, Newcastle and Aston Villa so don’t be surprised if he ends up at an English club this summer.

Cardozo did not set the world alight during the beginning of his career but over the past two seasons he has begun to develop a formidable reputation as a striker of true class.

He began his career with Nacional, where he quickly became a fan’s favourite and the clubs top scorer bagging 20 goals in 34 games. His displays led to him being named Paraguayan Footballer of the Year in 2006.

Cardozo’s reputation blossomed and it was Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina that acquired his services for $1.2 million. He made an instant impression, netting 11 goals in 16 games for his new club. In his solitary season at Los Leprosos he netted 21 goals in 33 games.

In 2007, Benfica signed the striker for €11.1million and his rich vein of form continued. He played a starring role in helping them to the League title and two Portugese Cups. The Paraguayan has scored 56 goals in 82 appearances at the Lisbon club with 36 of them coming last season.

He stands at 6ft 4inches and is as strong as an ox making it difficult to knock him off the ball. His aerial ability is excellent and he is able to hold the ball up and bring both his strike partner and midfielders into play. He possesses a formidable shot from outside the box and is a free kick specialist.

Last season he was top scorer in both the Portuguese League and Europa League. For all his attributes his technique is not the best and he is not especially fast. He is not able to beat defences by latching onto through balls.

Manchester City’s determination to spend big prior to UEFA’s spending regulations kick in, means that they will be linked with a whole host of top goal scores. Whilst Cardozo’s form has been excellent he has not proved himself in a big league yet and would represent a big gamble for Roberto Mancini and the Citizens.

Similarly question marks have to be raised over Cardozo being a good fit for Tottenham. Redknapp already has a big target man in Peter Crouch and this could be yet another name to throw into the hat of players linked with Spurs this summer.

Jose Mourinho wants Didier Drogba

Chelsea star Didier Drogba is being linked with Real Madrid.

New Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho will make a determined effort to sign Ashley Cole, but the biggest prize for him would be Drogba.

Chelsea are naturally reluctant to sell last season’s leading goalscorer but could be tempted to listen to offers should they land Liverpool striker Fernando Torres.

Drogba, 32, dreams of playing under Mourinho again, but Real will have to be prepared to come to the table with Kaka to stand any chance of pulling it off.

I will aways take penalty-Frank Lampard

Midfielder Frank Lampard says he is still happy to take penalties for England despite missing in the 2-1 friendly win Japan.

The Three Lions needed the help of two late Japan own goals to get the win but could have been on level terms ten minutes after the break if Lampard had converted from the spot.

Japan goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima managed to pull off a great save to thwart Lampard who says he is content in his role as penalty-taker if England boss Fabio Capello wants him there.

“It’s down to the manager,” the Chelsea player said. “I’ll always want to take it. It wasn’t a great penalty. It’s disappointing because I’ve practised loads this week. I’m always confident in taking them and that will make me go away and work harder. If the manager wants me to take it I’ll always step up.”

Nicolas Anelka and Michael Ballack facing massive pay cut to remain at chelsea

Nicolas Anelka is facing a massive pay-cut if he wants to stay at Chelsea.

The Premier League champions intend to slash their wage bill and expenditure by putting a ceiling on salaries and transfer fees in future.

Michael Ballack, who is also out of contract this summer, is likely to be released while Anelka, who has 12 months on his current deal, will have to accept a £50,000-a-week reduction to extend his contract by a further two years.

Luka Modric has signed a six-year deal with Tottenham

Luka Modric has signed a six-year deal which will keep him at Tottenham until 2016.

The Croatian playmaker has committed his future to the club amidst transfer speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp had no plans to sell Modric and will be buoyed by the fact he has pledged himself to remain at White Hart Lane. Modric said he felt he owed Tottenham for giving him a start and was keen to taste success with the club as they enter the realms of Champions League football.

“Tottenham Hotspur gave me my chance in the Premier League and I want to go on to achieve great success here with them,” he said. “Yes, there have been enquiries from other big clubs, but I have no interest in going anywhere. Last season’s top-four finish was an indication of where we are as a club and I feel I can continue to improve and go on to achieve everything I want to at Spurs.”

England 2-1 Japan

England 2 - Japan 1 (International Friendly, May 30, 2010) England were stunned after just seven minutes when a well worked short corner was turned in by Tulio Tanaka. Early in the second half England had a golden opportunity to level but Frank Lampard saw his penalty saved by Eiji Kawashima.

With eighteen minutes to go the Three Lions did pull level, Tulio Tanaka bagging his second of the match, heading into his own net from a Joe Cole cross. With seven minutes to go England found an unlikely winner, Yuji Nakazawa scoring Japan’s second og of the match from an Ashley Cole center.

Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid contract will have a ‘Manchester United escape clause’ included.

Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid contract will have a ‘Manchester United escape clause’ included.

The deal will allow him to move to Old Trafford should Sir Alex Ferguson step down, it has been revealed.

He will not leave anything to chance as he sets his sights on eventually succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

Mourinho is set to have an escape clause within his four-year Madrid deal. This will state that after serving Real for two years he will be able to move on – if their compensation requirement is met. It is Ferguson’s decision to prolong his stay at Old Trafford that has led Mourinho to seek sanctuary at the Bernabeu.

Privately Mourinho admits United is the only job that interests him in England, despite frequently hinting that one day he would like to return to Chelsea.

Everton target Pablo Aimar

According to Portuguese daily Abola, Everton are currently weighing up a bid for Argentinian midfielder Pablo Aimar who has just helped them to the Portuguese title.

The 30 year old playmaker began his career with Rive Plate, after deciding against pursuing a medical career. He rose through the youth ranks and into the first team where his skills led to Maradona claiming that the youngster was his “legitimate successor as the world’s greatest player,” not a bad accolade from a Boca fanatic.
In his five seasons at River he played a significant role in helping the club to the Argentinian title a Copa Libertadores and a South American Super Cup. As with all the best South American youngsters it was of no surprise when he joined Valencia for 24 million Euros in January 2001.

His success continued in Spain, helping break the Barcelona- Real Madrid stranglehold on La Liga. Two titles, a Uefa Cup, the World Super Cup and runners up in the Champions League made it the most successful period in Los Che’s history.
He was the central cog in Valencia’s game. He utilised his technique on the ball and his vision to gain that vital bit of space and play through balls for his wingers and attackers to latch onto.
In a team that consisted of Mendieta, Claudio Lopez, Baraja and Kiki Gonzalez he was the master pulling the strings, the conductor of a great orchestra.
In all he made 157 appearances and scored 27 goals for Valencia before being purchased by Real Zaragoza for 12 million Euros.

He did not enjoy his time at Zaragoza. In his two seasons with the club he suffered severe back and knee injuries in consecutive seasons which ruled him out for the majority of both seasons. His absence contributed to the team being relegated from La Liga.

Benfica came calling for the experienced player, and Zaragoza who were looking to cut their wage bill sold him for half of what they paid for him two years earlier.

Aimar has enjoyed a renaissance in Portugal where last season he appeared 35 times, scoring 5 goals.

The playmaker may be 30 and entering the back end of his career but last season he illustrated that he can still be considered as someone who can make things happen on the pitch.

Two worries would be that he is too similar a player to Mikel Arteta and that at 5ft 5inches he will not be strong enough to adapt to the rigours of the English game.

However, David Moyes’ record in the transfer market is second to none and if he purchases the little Argentinian we are sure that he will shine as the Everton manager hardly ever gets it wrong in the transfer market.

UEFA wants to ban Chelsea from europe

Michel Platini’s UEFA are pushing to ban British clubs like Chelsea from European competition.

UEFA have rubber-stamped proposals to make sure all European clubs limit their spending on wages and transfers to what they earn.

This could affect Premier League champs Chelsea, who have heavily relied on the funds of owner Roman Abramovich. UEFA president Michel Platini said: “I am not against debts – I am against losses.”

The rules, phased in over the next three years, will cap at 45m the amount rich owners can spend to underwrite losses.

Merseyside schoolboy Gerard Garner has topped a Wayne Rooney

Merseyside schoolboy Gerard Garner has topped a Wayne Rooney scoring record of 72, thought to be unbeatable.

Gerard, 11, surpassed the remarkable 72-goal haul notched up by the England star in the same under-11s team in 1996-97. Gerard’s team has now lifted NINE trophies this season and won ALL of their 39 games. Number 9 Gerard – dubbed “Jazza” by teammates – has helped himself to eight hat-tricks, bagged four goals on three occasions and twice fired in five goals. He also scored both goals in a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid’s youth team in a friendly in Spain.

Many thought they would never see 72 done again, but the little striker accomplished the feat with two games left to play. And when Liverpool Boys star Gerard thumped in number 73 in the under-11s North West Cup Final against Macclesfield at Deepdale, the new record was his.

He has attended the same school as Manchester United star Rooney – Our Lady & St Swithin’s primary in Croxteth. But there is one major difference – Gerard is a Red and Rooney, certainly when growing up, was a committed Blue.

Gerard, related to Kop legend Terry McDermott, said: “Wayne’s one of my heroes. But I’m a Liverpool fan so my favourite player is Torres.”

Proud Liverpool Boys U11 manager Andy Reidel, 46, said: “He is left-footed and has a great shot which has seen him score spectacular goals from 25 and 30 yards.”

Mum Noreen, 35, who has another son Michael, six, and daughter Antonia, four, said: “He first got taken on by Everton and I nearly fainted when I was told. Being signed on for Liverpool is even better

Was there ever any doubt? Chelsea went into their final Premier League match of the season knowing that only victory against Wigan Athletic would seal a fourth league title, with Manchester United breathing down their necks and going into a home match with Stoke City - who the Blues had spanked 7-0 in their previous home game. Carlo Ancelotti is the Blues' third Italian coach, following Gianluca Vialli and Claudio Ranieri. He is only the third manager to bring the title to Stamford Bridge, following Ted Drake and Jose Mourinho.
