Zidane-spain are the favourites
France World Cup legend Zinedine Zidane believes Vicente del Bosque’s side will be the team to beat in South Africa.
Three times the Fifa World Player of the Year, the former Real Madrid and Juventus star was awarded the Golden Ball for the best player at the 2006 World Cup.
Zidane also inspired Les Bleus to the World Cup title in 1998 in France, scoring two goals in the final against Brazil, but believes Euro 2008 champions Spain will be the strongest team in this year’s competition.
“Whoever beats Spain in South Africa will go on to win the World Cup,” declared Zidane.
Despite being regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation, the enigmatic Frenchman’s illustrious career ended in disgrace when as captain he was sent off in the final of the 2006 World Cup for a headbutt on Marco Materazzi as Italy went on to win the World Cup, a fact that Zidane revealed still hurts him today.
“No one knows what the six months afterwards felt like and if I was living the moment again today, obviously I would not do this again. It pains me that four years later people still speak of this,” revealed Zidane.

Herbalife has signed a three-year, multi-million dollar agreement with FC Barcelona
Herbalife has signed a three-year, multi-million dollar agreement with FC Barcelona to make Herbalife the club’s Official Nutrition Sponsor while lining up FC Barcelona star, Leo Messi, to a three-year personal services agreement that will support the sponsorship.
In addition to having global promotional rights to FC Barcelona’s various publicity assets, Herbalife will also have a strong presence in Barca’s pre-season friendly games and on the international tours the club undertakes each year before official competitions begin.
The agreement also states that as nutrition sponsor, doctors and nutrition experts from Herbalife’s Nutrition Advisory Board will meet with members of the first team to develop specific nutrition programs to support them.
“FC Barcelona is one of the greatest clubs in the world, made up of extraordinary athletes who perfectly illustrate our philosophy of living a healthy, active life. Our independent distributors around the world are incredibly excited that FC Barcelona and its players are representing our company, bringing together two leaders in our fields,” according to Michael O. Johnson, chairman and CEO of Herbalife.
MESSI: “I’m very happy to be associated with such a large, established nutrition company as Herbalife that’s known around the world. Together, we can help spread the word about how healthy nutrition can help athletes achieve the most out of their training, while at the same… time, work together on projects to help children at risk”

Manchester City are closing in on a £36 million deal for Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko.
Manchester City are closing in on a £36 million deal for Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko.
The surprise move followed the German club’s announcement that the Bosnia forward was set to stay after clubs failed to meet Monday’s midnight deadline for his £34 million buy-out clause.
The highly rated Dzeko scored 27 goals in 46 appearances for Wolfsburg last season and had become a target for Manchester United, Tottenham, Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Chelsea but none could match City’s financial muscle. General manager Dieter Hoeness had earlier expressed delight that Dzeko was staying.
However, City’s money in the end looks to have persuaded Wolfsburg it was too good an opportunity to turn down, regardless of timing. The 24-year-old has spent three years at Wolfsburg. He has played 23 times for Bosnia, scoring 14 goals

Arsenal inch closer to signing Lorient defender Laurent Koscielny
Few in Blighty would have heard of Lorient defender Laurent Koscielny before the summer, but now the 24-year-old centre-half is the name on all Arsenal fans lips after manager Arsene Wenger has made his move to snap up the defender.
The Gunners tried to sure-up their backline last summer splurging out on former Ajax centre-half Thomas Vermaelen, but after another trophy-less season The Professor is looking to replenish his back-line just twelve months later. This has much to do with the uncertainty surrounding whether or not Sol Campbell, Mikael Silvestre and William Gallas will remain at the Emirates next season, and even if those defenders remain on the north Londoners books next term, many will question whether they have the ability to lead Arsenal to silverware.
Koscielny, predominately a left-sided defender, was signed by Lorient from Tours in the summer of 2009 for a reported £1.2m transfer fee. At Les Merlus Koscielny quickly established himself as a mainstay in the heart of their rearguard, playing 40 matches in all competitions and netting four goals in the process.
Standing 6ft 1in tall, Koscielny though is far more accomplished than just being a big lanky lump at the back. Lauded for his positional awareness, pace, and tackling ability, Koscielny has forged a reputation as a robust and reliable defender. However it must be pointed out that he is yet to be tested at the highest levels.
Able to play for both France and Poland, Koscielny has yet to make his international debut for either nation, while the toughest level of football which he has been exposed to is one season in the French top flight.
That being the case, Arsenal appeared to have hedged their bets on Koscielny proving himself as the real deal by offering €5 million to Lorient for the defender. That offer though was swiftly rejected by the Ligue 1 outfit, with the Breton club rumoured to be holding out for €8m. Arsenal have since countered by offering defender Francis Coquelin on loan to Lorient to secure Koscielny’s signature.
Lorient appear to be in a strong position to ask for more dosh though, considering the other clubs said to be circling Koscielny. Both Lyon and Lille are mooted to be eyeing the Caen youth product, while Zenit St. Petersburg have also been linked to the defender.
During his time with Tours Koscielny netted a handful of goals from set-plays (see here), and that trend continue with Lorient last term (see here). Yet Gunners fans won’t be too interested in his goal-scoring form, rather his ability to defend.
On that note, it should be pointed out that Koscielny did somewhat embarrass himself against Bordeaux last season in the cup. After loosely giving away possession to the opposition with a lazy right-footed clearance out of defence, Koscielny proceeded to bring down new Arsenal signing Marouane Chamakh in the box which lead to the defender being sent off.

Liverpool wants 10 million for Yossi Benayoun.
Liverpool have slapped a £10 million price-tag on Chelsea target Yossi Benayoun.
Despite needing cash for players, manager Rafa Benitez does not want to sell to their main rivals and would prefer Benayoun to move abroad with another £6million offer already on the table from Spartak Moscow.
The problem for Benitez is that Benayoun, 30, wants the move to Chelsea and will push for a deal to be done. Aston Villa have also shown interest as they weigh up possible replacements for Manchester City target James Milner.
The Blues see Benayoun as a perfect replacement for Joe Cole who is set to leave after the World Cup.
Benayoun confirmed last week that a deal was imminent, saying: “Carlo Ancelotti wants me for next season and now everything depends on Liverpool. I believe that, in the end, I’ll be moving there.”

Inter Milan have made a new move for Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez.
The European champs made their move at the weekend – just when everyone thought they were chasing England manager Fabio Capello.
Inter president Massimo Moratti said: “Benitez is a manager I have always considered very good but for the moment he is engaged.”
An Italian source added: “Inter have been happy for everyone to think they want Capello as it’s taken everyone’s attention away from Benitez.” But Inter fear the Spaniard will still turn down a deal that will double his £4.5million-a-year wages as he has an almost impossible act to follow.
An insider added: “How could Rafa possibly do any better than Jose? The only way is down.”

Chelsea ready for super star signing
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has put aside £50 million for one marquee signing this summer.
Abramovich is prepared to shell out more than £50million on one marquee name if it means signing the superstar players who can take Chelsea to the top of European football. Real Madrid superstar Kaka and Liverpool’s Fernando Torres tick every box on Abramovich and Stamford Bridge coach Carlo Ancelotti’s wish-list.
The increasingly frenzied pursuit of Kaka saw chief scout Michael Emenalo – who has an increasing influence at Chelsea – dispatched to Curitiba recently for Brazil’s World Cup training camp to keep tabs on the playmaker as he recovers from injury.
Ancelotti is credited with getting the best out of Kaka when he was at AC Milan, and Abramovich is determined to bring him to West London
