Zidane-spain are the favourites

France World Cup legend Zinedine Zidane believes Vicente del Bosque’s side will be the team to beat in South Africa.

Three times the Fifa World Player of the Year, the former Real Madrid and Juventus star was awarded the Golden Ball for the best player at the 2006 World Cup.

Zidane also inspired Les Bleus to the World Cup title in 1998 in France, scoring two goals in the final against Brazil, but believes Euro 2008 champions Spain will be the strongest team in this year’s competition.

“Whoever beats Spain in South Africa will go on to win the World Cup,” declared Zidane.

Despite being regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation, the enigmatic Frenchman’s illustrious career ended in disgrace when as captain he was sent off in the final of the 2006 World Cup for a headbutt on Marco Materazzi as Italy went on to win the World Cup, a fact that Zidane revealed still hurts him today.

“No one knows what the six months afterwards felt like and if I was living the moment again today, obviously I would not do this again. It pains me that four years later people still speak of this,” revealed Zidane.
